Essential Oils

Essential Oil Uses

Looking for the remedy to a problem? Have a particular skin condition? This page will help you chose which pure unadulterated essential oils to use. It is broken down into categories. Also provided is the guides for diluting essential oils with carrier oils, a guide for scenting, and some blending suggestions.

Carrier Oil Dilution ratio:
Most essential oils need to be diluted in either water or a carrier oil. An easy way to remember the conversion rate is 20/1. For every 20 drops of carrier oil add 1 drop of pure essential oil or use the conversion chart below for larger quantities.

Blending:
Certain oils have similar properties, and we have found blends that are also pleasing to the senses. Feel free to create your own. Some suggestions are provided below.

Scenting:
When scenting and start low, with a small portion of product so you don't ruin the entire base.

Be advised that we will not replace your base if you over scent and damage the base. The most common issue is with the Shampoos and Gels as they are very pH picky and if you over scent then it will liquefy the product into water and there is almost no way to fix it. So be cautious when doing them, because you can always add more but you can't remove it after scenting it.

Children:

  • 5 Years + All of the above plus: Peppermint, Rosemary, Geranium, Petitgrain, Lime Taming the Wild Child Lemon, Lavender, Chamomile, Mandarin Colic Dill, Chamomile, Lavender Properties.

    Bed time for Baby:
    Place a few drops of lavender or another calming essential oil on your baby's blanket or stuffed animal, and let the aroma do its work at bed or nap time.

Child Tantrums: Take a child's favorite stuffed animal and put of few drops of their favorite oil on it.  During tantrums, let the child hold and smell the animal.  The aroma will be calming.  Consider: Lemon, Mandarin, Chamomile, Lavender, Tangerine, Clary Sage, or Peppermint.  Every child is different, find the oil that best calms him/her.

Cradle Cap: Chamomile, Lavender

Humidifier: (cool mist). Add from 3 to 9 drops of your chosen EO to the water of the humidifier. Run overnight, or add the essential oils two or three times a day, if running continuously. Please note, the essential oils can conceivably damage a humidifier. I've never had this happen, but it is a risk. This is an effective method if using the essential oils with a sick child.

Cooking:

Which oils are safe to use for cooking? Rule Number 1: Only use therapeutic-grade essential oils. Read the Warning before using oils. Here is a list of generally regarded as safe (GRAS) oils by the FDA: Angelica, Basil, Bergamot, Chamomile (roman), Chamomile (German), Cinnamon Bark, Citrus Rind (all), Clary Sage, clove, Coriander, Dill, Eucalyptus Globulus, Frankincense, Galbanum, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Hyssop, Juniper, Jasmine, Laurus Nobilis, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Melissa (lemonbalm), Marjoram, Myrrh, Myrtle, Nutmeg, Orange, Oregano, Patchouli, Pepper, Peppermint, Petitgrain, Pine, Rosemary, Rose, Savory, Sage, Sandalwood, Spearmint, Spruce, Tarragon, Tangerine, Thyme, Valerian, Vertiver, & Ylang ylang.

Essential oils used in recipes: Add the essential oil right before serving. The heat will evaporate essential oils with the steam. With a few oils that are too strong - such as basil, oregano and rosemary - simmering will produce a wonderfully subtle bouquet that is out of this world.

Essential oils should be diluted in vegetable oil, agave syrup, almond or rice milk prior to ingestion. As a general rule, dilute 1 drop of essential oil in 1 teaspoon of honey, Agave Syrup, or in 2 ounces of a beverage. (Honey should not be given to children under 2 years of age.)

For stronger spice oils - such as basil, cinnamon, marjoram, nutmeg, oregano, or thyme - dip a toothpick in a bottle of essential oil and stir it in the recipe after cooking. It is an excellent way to flavor food. Imagine, only 2 drops of an essential oil is equivalent to a full bottle (2 oz size) of dried herbs.

For a recipe that serves 6-10 people, add 1 or 2 drops of a lighter essential oil, such as citrus oils like lemon, orange, tangerine. Stir in just before serving, so the oil does not evaporate.

Only use cookware you love and trust. Get the Titanium Cookware - pots and pans that will last you a lifetime! Cook without oil or water - food will not burn! And dishwashing is a breeze. pure essential oils eat through plastic. Try to avoid storage or usage of EO in a plastic container for more than 30 minutes.

Essential Oils for Weight Control: The sense of smell is responsible for 90% of our taste. Research has found that by inhaling a culinary scent, such as an essential oil, regularly throughout the day, especially when hungry, can suppress our desire to taste and therefore eat. By inhaling an aroma 6 times in each nostril, the epistat in our brain which controls hunger gets switched off. For best results, change oils daily for variety. Warning: If a culinary aroma is inhaled only briefly, the reverse effect can occur; appetite can be stimulated.

Flavoring: Either add a drop or two of a citrus, spice, or floral EO to a cup of honey, mix well and let stand, OR put a couple of drops of the same EO on a scrap of paper towel, lay on top of a jar of sugar, seal tightly and let stand for a week. Add the flavor of the fresh plant to sugar for tea, baking, etc.

Flavored Ice Cubes: Make flavored Ice cubes for lemonade, water, or punch by adding a drop of essential oil to your ice tray.

General use:

Antibacterial: Bergamot, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Cypress, Everlasting, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Lime, Patchouli, Palmarosa, Pine, Ravensara, Rose, Sandalwood, Eucalyptus, Thyme, Basil, Tea Tree

Antiviral: Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Palmarosa, Ravensara, Tea Tree, Thyme, Tarragon

Antifungal: Cedarwood, Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lemongrass, Patchouli, Peppermint, Sandalwood, Thyme, Tea Tree, Basil

Antiseptic: Basil, Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Eucalyptus, Grapefruit, Geranium, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, Thyme, Mandarin, Neroli*, Petitgrain

Anti-Inflammatory: Chamomile, Citronella, Everlasting, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Ginger, Lavender, Rose, Patchouli, Spearmint, Peppermint, Sandalwood

Band Aid Goo: 2 drops of lemon oil rubbed on the area with a clean cloth will quickly remove the sticky residue.

Breath freshener: Put a drop peppermint on your hand between the base of your thumb and index finger and take the drop into your mouth, holding under your tongue.  The peppermint will freshen breath for 10-15 min.

Circulation: Cypress, Ginger, Juniper, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Peppermint, Rosemary, Rose, Thyme.
Blend: Peppermint, Lemon and Ginger OR Rosemary, Cypress and Juniper 

Diffuse:

  • Cassia - helps with awareness, mental acuity
  • Lemon - aids in concentration
  • Eucalyptus - boost the immune system, Kill flu and cold virus
  • Citrus oils - for happiness
  • Peppermint, Cinnamon, Clove, Ginger, Wild Orange or White fir - to bring in the Christmas spirit

Fingernails (stronger/healthier): Massage a drop of lemon oil into your nails and cuticles twice a week.

Hiccups: Add 4-5 drops of Peppermint to 1-2 tbs of room temperature water in a small glass or shot glass.  Drink, and the hiccups will usually stop immediately.

Immune system: Did you know that flavoring water with your favorite citrus oil will greatly boost your immune system.  Fight off cold and flu attacks, and reduce their severity by having a drop or two in every glass of water you drink.  And always drink a lot of water. Favorites:  Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit. Other suggested oils Cinnamon, Everlasting, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Ravensara, Rose, Rosemary, Tea Tree

Memory: Basil, Bergamot, Cinnamon, Juniper, Rosemary, Thyme, Ylang Ylang.
Blend: Bergamot, Rosemary and Ylang Ylang 

Nausea: Basil, Chamomile, Ginger, Lavender, Lemon, Rose, Peppermint, Dill, Sandalwood.

Poison Ivy, oak: Combine calamine lotion with peppermint (1tblsp with 5 drops) and apply to itchy areas.

Small cuts, scrapes:Believe it or not, Peppermint oil is soothing to open wounds, and is highly anti-bacterial.  Small cuts and scrapes will feel better and heal quickly.  Apply or spray without diluting.

Sunburn: Peppermint oil is cooling and soothing to sunburns.  Make a spray and use undiluted or 5-10 drops in a few tbs' of distilled water.  It will help protect against infection, however, consider that lavender or frankincense has better healing properties for burns.  Apply lavender or frankincense then layer with peppermint spray to drive the oils and cool and comfort the skin.

Swelling: Chamomile*, Cypress, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, Fennel, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Rosemary, Peppermint, Rose*, Juniper, Petitgrain, Ylang Ylang.
Blend: Lavender and Lemon OR Peppermint, Fennel and Rosemary 

Toothpicks: Make highly concentrated flavored toothpicks by putting 10-20 drops of essential oil in a small vile with 10-20 toothpicks in it.  Shake well, the let them sit (on its side) for at least 24 hours, turning (rotating) every few hours.  Favorite oils are Cinnamon or Peppermint. Consider adding clove to help with addictions. (use caution with "hot" oils)

Hair:

Dandruff: Basil, Cypress, Cedarwood, Rosemary, Patchouli, Juniper, Lavender, Mandarin, Thyme, Tea Tree
Blend: Tea Tree, Basil and Lemon OR Mandarin, Rosemary and Cedarwood 

Dry Hair: Lavender, Rosemary, Geranium, Sandalwood, Chamomile, Cedarwood, Clary Sage
Blend: Tea Tree, Basil and Lemon OR Mandarin, Rosemary and Cedarwood 

Hair Loss: Rosemary, Basil, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Cypress, Cedarwood, Thyme, Juniper, Geranium, Neroli, Chamomile, Ylang Ylang
Blend: Rosemary, Grapefruit and Thyme OR Chamomile, Cypress and Lemon 

Normal Hair: Lavender, Lemon, Geranium, Chamomile, Rosemary, Basil, Thyme, Palmarosa, Ylang Ylang
Blend: Chamomile and Lemon OR Rosemary and Lemon 

Oily Hair: Lavender, Rosemary, Cypress, Lemon, Basil, Thyme, Cedarwood, Juniper
Blend: Cypress and Lemon OR Rosemary, Lemon and Thyme 

Thicker, fuller: Add 20-50 droops of Rosemary to shampoo &/or conditioner for thicker, fuller hair, and to slow thinning.  (Does not help re-grow hair)  And it smells wonderful.

Household Use:

Air filter: Every time you change the air filters in your home, place a few drops of on guard or other essential oil on the filter.  It will kill microbes in your duct work, and make your home smell wonderful for a short time.

Carpet deodorizer: Take an cleaned out Pringles style can, use a hole punch to punch several holes in the lid.  Add 1 cup of baking soda and 20-40 drops of essential oil, mix well and put in the canister.  Sprinkle on carpet area's and let sit for up to 1/2 hour then vacuum.  Deodorizes, and kills microbes.  Consider Citrus oils or blends, lavender, white fir, peppermint, etc.

Cleaning (general): Use Lemon or Grapefruit EO, possibly with a touch of Tea Tree oil added, in the water you clean with. Wipe down kitchen counters and your bathroom with these cleansing, germicidal oils. I find that Lemon Oil in water does a wonderful job cleaning the bathroom mirror, as well as all the fixtures.

Cool feet: Add a few drops of peppermint to the souls of your shoes on a hot day or before a walk or run to keep your feet cool, and to help with unpleasant odors.  Add a few drops of Cypress if your feet sweat a lot.

Cooling spay: Working hard on a hot, sweaty day?  How about an athlete burning calories during a hard practice, workout or game.  Maybe you're just a spectator in the hot sweltering stands.  Get a spray bottle and add 10-20 drops of peppermint to a ½ - 1 cup of water and use as a cooling spray to the face, neck and base of the scull.  Not only is it cooling, but also invigorating.

Dishwasher: Add 10-20 drops of Lemon to your dishwasher's rinse cycle for spot free dishes.

DVD-CD Cleaning: Did you know that lemon oil is great at cleaning DVD's and CD's and will even remove light scratches that could be causing playback problems.  Apply 3-5 drops on the surface of the disk, spread around the surface with a soft Kleenex or paper towel.   Then wipe from the center of the disk to the outside edge till the oil is evaporated. If there are heavy scratches, you can leave the essential oil on the disc surface for a minute or two before wiping off.  Caution: If you use to much oil, without wiping off, it can eat through the outer surface to the written data.

Fear of Flying: Have a hanky available, and place Lavender or another calming essential oil on it.  During times of anxiety, inhale the aroma in your hanky.

Fireplace or Campfire: Place several drops of frankincense or Vetiver on a log and place in the fire for an enhanced earthy aroma.

Foot powder, Stinky Feet: Add 15 drops of peppermint and 10 drops of Melaleuca to ½ cup of corn starch and mix well in an empty mini can of Pringles.  Then punch several holes in the plastic lid so it can be used as a shaker.  Apply in socks or shoes before getting dressed.  Replace the lid with holes with an airtight lid to keep the mixture fresh and usable.

Freshen your towels: Make a spray with ½ cup of distilled water and 10-20 drops of your favorite essential oil.  Spay your bath towel just before getting into the shower.  When you get out, enjoy the aroma of a fresh, essentially treated towel.

Grease Cutter: Lemon and Orange Oil are great grease cutters; add a few drops to the dish water.

Gum: Use lemon or Orange oil to remove gum from carpet, hair or animal fur.

Ironing: Want to add some fantastic aroma to a freshly pressed shirt?  Add a couple drops of your favorite oil or blend to your water spritzer before pressing.

Laundry: Essential Oils may be added to the washing machine, or a few drops put on a cotton cloth and added to the dryer. If using in the washer, the warnings above about possible damage to plastic or hard rubber parts would apply.

  • Adding a teaspoon of Lemon Oil to the washer will remove greasy/oily smells. (A great trick for Massage .therapists!)
  • Research indicates that adding Eucalyptus Globulous to the washing machine MAY kill dust mites in bedding.
  • Lavender EO in the dryer on a wash cloth for great smelling laundry.
  • To really preserve the scent of EO's used in the dryer, add them and run on a 'no heat' cycle for a few minutes at the end of the drying cycle.

Leather conditioner: Mix 10 drops of essential oil with ½ cup of neat's-foot oil or food grade lanoline oil then spray and wipe leather surfaces to condition leather and protect from cracking.

Paint: Lemon is extremely effective at removing over spray or painting mistakes.  Especially if the paint has not hardened or set for long.

Permanent Marker: Permanent marker is no match against a couple drops of lemon oil and some elbow grease.

Pet Powder: Don't enjoy that 'wet dog' smell?  Try this non-toxic powder. Mix well, and keep in a small Pringles can with several holes in the top.  Sprinkle a small amount on your dog or pet gorilla and brush through the coat.  Will not only smell great, but repels ticks and other pests. Use after bathing, trimming or when needed.  Keep airtight between uses.

  • Mix 1 Cup Corn Starch, 5 drops Lavender, 5 drops Geranium, & 4 drops Eucalyptus

Sticky stickers: Let a drop or two of lemon absorb onto the sticker for a few moments, then wipe clean.

Super-glue: Super-glue is no match for lemon oil.  Especially if it has not set up for long, just a drop at points of contact and in a minute, it will become super-un-glued.

Scuff Marks: Ugly black rubber can leave marks on vinyl, tile, wood, even car plastics and vinyl's.  Lemon oil and Peppermint are both excellent at removing these marks.  Every essential oil is better with different types of marks.  So if one does not work, try the other.  Apply directly to the scuff, and then rub it with a towel or cloth. 

Vacuum filter: Have a HEAPA or other filtered vacuum?  Put a few drops of your favorite oil on the filter and pop it back in.  Air flowing through the filter dispels amazing aroma throughout the room, and kills any nasty microbes or bacteria that might be hanging out in your vacuum.

Wake up your potpourri: Liven up old potpourri that has lost its aroma by mixing 5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil(s) to 2 tbs of grapeseed oil then mixing with the potpourri.

Sinus problems:

Inhalation: Add 5 to 7 drops to a bowl of steaming hot water, put a 'towel tent' over the head to capture the steam. Close your eyes and inhale until water cools or until you stop smelling the oil. Repeat, if necessary, every four or five hours.

Microdiffusion: Use a nebulizing diffuser that will break the oil into millions of micro-particles. In case of illness, inhale near the "mouth" of the nebulizer. Only four or five minutes worth should be sufficient, repeat every few hours.

Skin:

Acne: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Geranium, Grapefruit, Everlasting, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Neroli, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Ravensara, Rose, Rosemary, Petitgrain, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Tea Tree, Thyme
Blend: Tea Tree and Lemon OR Lavender, Chamomile and Rosewood 

After Shower: Apply 5 to 7 drops to a damp wash cloth. Rub briskly all over the body. Preferably allow to air dry.

Aging Skin: Bergamot, Cypress, Chamomile, Everlasting, Jasmine, Juniper, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Neroli, Palmarosa, Petitgrain, Patchouli, Ravensara, Rosewood, Rosemary, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang
Blend: Everlasting and Bergamot OR Neroli and Cypress

State of Mind:

Anxiety: Try putting 5 drops of Essential oil on your palm, then rubbing it over your chest and heart, then cup and inhale between your hands.  This will help relieve anxiety or angina.  Consider: Peppermint, Cypress, Marjoram, and Frankincense.

The Blues: Angelica, Anise, Bergamot, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Cypress, Everlasting, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Lavender, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Neroli, Orange, Patchouli, Peppermint, Tangerine, Ravensara, Rose, Rosemary, Sandalwood, Spearmint, Ylang Ylang.
Blend: Ravensara, Tangerine and Lemon OR Chamomile, Ylang Ylang and Grapefruit 

Calming: Chamomile, Lavender, Lemon, Rosewood, Patchouli, Neroli, Sandalwood, Mandarin, Ravensara, Tangerine, Ylang Ylang.
Blend: Chamomile and Lavender OR Mandarin, Ylang Ylang and Tangerine 

Refreshing: Cypress, Eucalyptus, Juniper, Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime, Orange, Peppermint, Ravensara, Tangerine, Mandarin, Rosemary, Ylang Ylang.

Relax: Try a blend of 2 drops each of Frankincense and Peppermint or Frankincense and Cypress to the back of the neck to ease and relax a restless spirit. Recommended oils Angelica, Chamomile, Citronella, Geranium, Jasmine, Basil, Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rosewood, Tangerine, Ylang Ylang.
Blend: Neroli, Orange and Mandarin OR Rosewood, Ylang Ylang and Bergamot 

Sleeplessness: Anise, Chamomile, Basil, Citronella, Clary Sage, Juniper, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Orange, Ravensara, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Mandarin, Petitgrain, Tangerine.
Blend: Chamomile, Lavender and Lemon OR Mandarin, Tangerine and Rose 

Stay Awake: Put 5 drops of Peppermint on the palm of your hand and rub the back of your neck and base of the skull.  Then cup and inhale the residue from your hand.  You will feel the cooling effects of the peppermint in about 30-60 seconds.  It will make you more alert and help you wake up or stay awake.  Great if you have trouble getting up in the mornings or if you get drowsy easily in meetings, at the office or behind the wheel.

Stress: Angelica, Basil, Cypress, Cedarwood, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Tarragon, Mandarin, Petitgrain, Chamomile*, Patchouli, Palmarosa, Neroli, Tangerine,Rose Jasmine, Ylang Ylang.

Cramps: Excellent for topical application to ease pain, from strained muscles, menstrual cramps, etc. Add 4 to 7 drops of Essential Oil to a bowl of warm water. Swish the surface of the water with a cloth, wring out, apply to area, repeat when cloth cools. You may cover the warm cloth with a sheet of plastic and a towel to keep the warmth in longer. This is an excellent method for treating painful menstrual cramps. Choose an essential oil like lavender, peppermint, or frankincense.
